Tartan is No. 1 in Midwest for Relay event
It’s official, Tartan High School’s Relay for Life event earned the school the ranking of Number 1 in the Midwest and Number 3 in the Nation for its fundraising efforts.
Held last May, the event raised more than $130,000, surpassing last year’s record and beating the school’s goal of $100,000. Besides increasing the total dollars raised, the school’s per capita amount also increased from $54 last year to $74 this year. More than 670 students participated in the event.
The news was announced at the end of September during the annual Youth Summit, which several Tartan students attended.
Tartan is also starting the first chapter of High Schools Against Cancer (HAC) in the nation. HAC is the sister organization to Colleges Against Cancer, which runs Relay events on college campuses across the country.
Tartan student receives award from Student Paths
Maikang Xiong, a junior at Tartan High School, was recently given a $200 award from Student Paths, a national organization that helps students prepare for life after high school.
Careers Teacher Vicki Kapaun and Principal John Bezek presented Xiong with the award on Wednesday Sept. 26.
“Not only do we strive to help students get a better sense of who they are and what that means when considering options after high school, but we also play a role in reducing the burden that students and families may face with educational and career pursuits after high school,” said Student Paths Founder, Chris Wills. “Congratulations to Maikang! We also thank Tartan High School for the great support they give their students and the Student Paths program.”
Xiong was delighted by the award and plans to use it towards her educational expenses pursuing a career in Accounting.
Tartan Business students attend Regional Business Luncheon
Six Tartan students donned their business wear and brushed up on their etiquette to attend the 8th Annual Regional Business Conference held at the Prom Center.
More than 300 representatives from the business community attended this event. The keynote speaker was Cyndi Lesher, CEO of Northern States Power, who is President of the MN Host Committee for the 2008 Republican National Convention.
Tartan students Casey Churchill, Katie Evans, Wendy Lee, Stacy Xiong, Jessie Oldenborg and Natalie Mehlhorn all work in community businesses as part of Tartan’s Business Internship Program. They used this luncheon to develop business contacts and to learn more about community issues. Tartan Principal John Bezek and Business Internship Advisor/Teacher Sheryl Krengel also attended the Luncheon.
